SVHCs are chemicals identified by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) under the REACH Regulation (EC Regulation No 1907/2006) because they may have serious effects on human health and the environment. They may be:
- Carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (CMR)
- Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB)
- Endocrine disruptors and other substances with equivalent serious effects
SVHCs may be included in the Candidate List and subsequently subject to authorisation for use in the European Union. Avoiding these compounds in construction products means ensuring safer working and living environments, reducing the risk of exposure to hazardous substances.
