MCI® 2005 is a water-based liquid organic corrosion inhibitor additive for concrete and mortar to protect reinforcing steel. When added to concrete, MCI 2005 provides retardation effects while forming a monomolecular protective layer on embedded metals.
In new constructions, it helps to raise the critical chloride threshold and reduce corrosion rates once the corrosion process has started. When used in the production of or added to mortars, MCI 2005 not only protects the reinforcement where it is applied but is also able to migrate into adjacent parts of the concrete, protecting the structures.
MCI 2005 is an organic corrosion inhibitor, considered ambidic (mixed), as it protects both anodic and cathodic areas within a corrosion cell.
MCI 2005 contains a mixture of amino salts of carboxylic acids that form a protective layer on the iron, delaying the onset of corrosion and reducing existing corrosion rates.
Fields of application: MCI 2005 is an ideal additive for reinforced, precast, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete structures (especially in marine or highly aggressive environments where steel corrosion is triggered, subject to carbonation, the presence of chlorides and atmospheric attack) and is suitable for bridges, viaducts, overpasses, car parks, exposed concrete, concrete structures at sea and post-tensioned structures. It is also NSF Standard 61 certified for use with drinking water.
Advantages: the product has lower toxicity and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional calcium nitrite mixtures, is a single low-dose additive independent of chloride content, has minimal effects on concrete properties (workability, strength development, air entrainment) and has the ability to migrate through porous substrates (such as concrete, masonry or limestone) by capillary action, vapour diffusion and ionic attraction.
