Corrosion of iron in concrete: 3 solutions for targeted and sustainable protection

Corrosion of reinforcement is one of the main causes of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. According to the AMPP, the global costs of corrosion account for 6.8% of world GDP, with a significant portion attributable to the construction sector. Proactive corrosion management can reduce these costs by up to $2.5 trillion per year.
To address this challenge in an efficient and sustainable manner, Cortec® has developed cutting-edge technologies based on migrating inhibitors and protective films. Proind offers three specific technical solutions for applications on new constructions, existing structures and exposed metal surfaces: MCI®-2005, MCI®-2020 and VpCI®-325.

MCI®-2005 is a liquid additive to be added directly to the concrete mix. It complies with ASTM C1582 and has been tested under severe conditions according to ASTM G109, proving to be extremely effective in reducing the corroded area (up to 71% less than the control) and significantly delaying the onset of degradation.

Laboratory data – ASTM G109:

• Integrated corrosion: 29 C vs 155 C for the control (80% less)
• Corrupted area: 2.36 in² vs 8.93 in²
• Critical chloride content: unchanged, no negative effect

The product is also:

• Recognised by ACI 212.3R
• Effective even in cracked concrete
• Compatible with standard mix designs
• Does not accelerate setting times or increase shrinkage

Results of the Bavarian–Reiner study (2004):

• Average current density: 0.4 μA/cm² with MCI® vs 1.4 μA/cm² in the untreated sample
• XPS profiling: the protective film of the inhibitor was detected at depths greater than those of chlorides, up to 85 nm

VpCI®-325 is an oil-based anti-corrosion solution formulated with biobased (plant-derived) components for the temporary protection of exposed metal surfaces. Ideal for construction sites, prefabrication, transport or storage of steel and iron prior to concrete pouring.
